Melanie and Dylan are Silver Foxes. I agreed to provide a permanent home for them when their owners decided that they
would not make good pets. They were originally bred as exotic pets, escaped from their original owner and were passed along to a couple in the Utica area, who gave them to me. Silver foxes are a color variant of
the red fox developed through selective breeding by the fur industry. Much like the domestic ferret, they are not considered wildlife, and cannot survive in the wild (although there are occasional black
variants found in the wild).
To me, they are an example of a type of animal that we should not be breeding at all. I have no use for the fur industry & foxes do not make good pets. These animals are caught in between, misfits. They are too tame to be wild and too wild to be tame. They will spend their lives in captivity, for their own protection, but will always feel the call of the wild and yearn for freedom. It’s always sad to keep an animal in a cage, but with these animals its especially hard. They are so playful and curious, they constantly need enrichment in their captive environment, and will always be looking to escape. A cage can’t be built large enough for them to be truly happy. In past years we have had to make the hard choice of sending orphaned foxes extreme distances to find siblings with which they can be raised. It is unacceptable to raise orphans alone, they need the companionship of siblings both for their mental state and to keep them wild and releasable. Now, a lone orphan can be placed next to Melanie & Dylan’s cage for companionship. I will have these two for life, and hope that eventually they will overcome their distrust of humans and be handleable. They would make great ambassadors for their species if they can learn to accept humans, but they have a home with me regardless. |
