The Dunham Bay Goose Story
We received dozens of calls about this goose with fishing
line wrapped around her leg. She hung out with her family in Dunham's Bay
on Lake George. I went over to the Bay again and again, first by myself to
check her out, then with a gang of four people with nets, then with a boat &
more people, then a swimmer and a boat and finally with the boat, two swimmers
and a gang on shore. After two & a half weeks she started limping and then
holding the leg up. I was sure she had lost the foot and felt awful for not
catching her in time.
On the last attempt, after trying
unsuccessfully to lure her onto shore and to outswim her, we gave up and sent
the gang of netters home. On the way back to the dock we decided to make one
more try from the boat. We lured the goose and her family between the boat and
the weeds with bread and sent a swimmer off each side of the boat. We corned her
in the weeds, as the family scattered, pulled her into the boat and removed the
fish line. As we neared shore I felt her foot getting warmer and warmer as the
blood flow returned to normal. When we got to shore I looked her over carefully
to make sure she was fishline free; and I suddenly felt her feet pushing against
my leg, yes, both feet! I released her back with her very concerned family (dad
& four goslings). After this we received a donation to purchase a throw net to
help with these types of captures.
